“Scottish Government Workshop on Scoping an Offshore Wind Sustained Observation Programme” (OW-SOP)

21 March 2024

Victoria Quay, Edinburgh, UK – In person

Workshop outline

This workshop is being held on behalf of the Scottish Government’s Offshore Wind and Marine Directorates as part of a project funded by ScotMER. The workshop aims to review and discuss how large-scale expansion of offshore wind could change physical and biogeochemical water column properties within the North Sea.

Little information exists on the potential cumulative impact of offshore wind on the water column through physical process change, especially within deeper (more stratified) waters. Such changes could influence primary productivity (e.g. through mixing) and have the potential to impact higher trophic levels.

We will consider how existing data collection programmes could be built upon in a pragmatic way, and how existing and new platforms (such as wind farm structures) could be utilised to obtain long-term time series measurements. This will contribute to the evidence base for understanding the potential impacts of offshore wind on physical and biogeochemical water column processes and, consequently, the wider ecosystem. The discussion could potentially contribute to the overall process of the Habitat Regulation Appraisals (HRA) and Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEA) for offshore developments and support future planning work.

The role of modelling and digital twins will be discussed, considering how observation programme design can be guided by model output and the requirement for model validation.

Please note that this form is only an expression of interest and not a confirmation of attendance. Expression submissions will close on 20 February 2024.  We will contact the selected attendees with a formal invitation by 27 February 2024
